Overview

Mary Kirby Nakamura, a Japanese citizen, was Cortland's first international student. Known as Mary Kirby, she graduated from the Cortland Normal School in 1900. Afterwards she returned to Japan, where she met and married Tanachiro Nakamura. While she subsequently visited the United States on several occasions, she primarily stayed in Japan teaching English to school children.

This article in the student newspaper (published in 1927) contains a misprint. It mentioned that Nakamura graduated in 1909, while in fact she graduated in 1900.
