In here, you'll find materials used in the library session along with supplemental content to help you identify and evaluate different forms of children's literature.

Opening Task:

What's the Point?

PROFESSIONAL GOAL: This session will teach you about a variety of children’s book formats and genres, as well as strategies for determining level and overall quality.

ASSIGNMENT GOAL: You will be able to distinguish and evaluate different types of illustrated children's books to prepare for your Literature Study.

Students will be able to evaluate information, in order to select the best resources for their information needs.

[Intermediate Level]

After this session, you'll be able to:

  • Evaluate the characteristics of illustrated books in order to determine if/how you would use them in your placements or assignments (eg., literature study, read alouds, etc)
  • Apply evaluation strategies to various children’s book formats in order to examine them based on level, content, authority, relevance, currency, or other distinguishing characteristics 
  • Apply your knowledge of discipline-specific language (genre, format, etc) to your picture book evaluations, in order to make effective read aloud selections
