Interactive Read Aloud Lesson Plan
The focus of an interactive read aloud is to demonstrate for children how word knowledge, word consciousness, and comprehension can be developed during reading. This lesson plan will model vocabulary learning and/or comprehension strategies through the gradual release of responsibility. You will focus your interactive read aloud on vocabulary development or comprehension as outlined by the New York State Education Department P-3 Best Literacy Instructional Practices document. Additional information will be provided in class and on Brightspace. You will teach this lesson to your peers in class and submit the final document for evaluation to Brightspace (see Course Calendar).
Group Assignment: Literature Study and Presentation (20 points)
In groups of three (3) or four (4), you will select three high quality children’s books (for groups of three) or four high-quality children’s books (for groups of four) linked across a particular theme. With these books, you will engage in a group discussion about the genre and content of the books, define what makes these books high-quality, and brainstorm ways that you could use each book to develop three instructional goals for each book specific to developing proficient reading skills as noted and defined by the New York State Education Department and/or the National Reading Panel. Finally, you will prepare a 15-minute (for groups of three) or 20-minute presentation (for groups of four) on these texts, their genre and content, and provide descriptions and examples of how you will/would teach each of the strategies you chose to teach with each text. This will be presented in class (see Course Calendar).
