Makerspace Guide

Introduction

No one is perfect; we understand that you may not always fulfill every expectation we have. In an effort to help meet our goals we try to be sure that you get feedback that you need. This may be a simple ‘Thank you’ for a job well done or it may be a brief discussion about lateness. In addition to informal feedback, supervisors will formally review student assistants’ job performance at the end of each semester.

Feedback is not one-way; we encourage you to provide your supervisor with feedback. You are our eyes and ears. If you have any suggestions to improve our services or help the library become a better place to work, email makerspace@cortland.edu.

Performance Reviews

At the end of every semester, we will conduct a performance review. Employees will complete a self-evaluation before meeting with the Emerging Technologies Librarian. This process encourages students to reflect on their own performance and provides them with experience receiving feedback in a professional setting. The goal is to have constructive conversations about performance, strengths, areas for growth, and how best to support their development.

Meeting Expectations

Warning Letter
When expectations are not being met, we may resort to a warning letter. A warning letter will state the specific issue(s) and the expected outcome. You may receive more than one warning depending on the nature of the problem.

Final Warning Letter

If a pattern of unmet expectations arises or you fail to heed a warning letter, you may receive a ‘final warning.’ This letter will clearly state the specific issue(s) and the expected outcome. If you receive a final warning and fail to resolve your issues, you will be dismissed from employment.

Dismissal
Unfortunately, there will be employees who will consistently fail to meet the expectations outlined. Those who fail to resolve their issues or who flagrantly violate employment policies or state/local law will be dismissed. As the SUNY Cortland Student Employment Services Student Employment Handbook states, "Once a student has been selected for a job, continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance. If the employer decides performance is not satisfactory, the student may be released after a formal evaluation session."

Appeal Process
If you want to appeal the Emerging Technology Librarian's decision, contact Jennifer Kronenbitter, Director of Libraries.
