About Informational Texts

Informational Texts (or Expository Texts) are written with a very specific purpose: to provide information to the reader about a specific topic. They're usually written in a straightforward way and often have a variety of text features that help to effectively explain this information. These features might include: a table of contents, index, glossary, maps, charts, diagrams, headings, text boxes, and more!

How do I find informational texts within the TMC?

  • These texts can be found all throughout the TMC's Nonfiction+ collection, on a wide variety of topics and levels.
  • This section is arranged according to the Library of Congress Call Number System, which means it's grouped by topic!

For Example: Say you're looking for books about whales. You run a search in the ONESearch and see that a lot of the whale-themed books start with QL 737...

  • The section starting with Q will have math and science topics...
  • You can get even narrower by going to QL, which has zoology, or animal topics...
  • You can get EVEN NARROWER from there and go to the books starting with QL 737, which are all about whales...
    • This means that if you find a specific nonfiction book that interests you, you can go browse around it on the shelf for more books on that same subject!
