What's the Point?

PROFESSIONAL GOAL: You will learn how to evaluate texts for format, relevance, and developmental appropriateness in order to find engaging texts for upper elementary grades.

ASSIGNMENT GOAL: You will be able to strategically find relevant and developmentally appropriate (gr. 3-5) texts for your literacy lesson plan.

Students will be able to understand and use basic research techniques in order to locate information.

[Advanced Level]

After this session, you'll be able to:

  • Explain why you select specific search tools
  • Construct and articulate a search strategy using the features of various search tools (ONESearch, CLCD) to locate books for specific formats (informational texts), topics (various) and levels (3-5th grade)
  • Analyze your search results, in order to determine their relevance to their information need (social studies informational texts)

Students will be able to evaluate information, in order to select the best resources for their information needs.

After this session, you'll be able to:

  • Justify your rationale for choosing particular books
  • Analyze informational texts for quality based on level, content, authority, relevance, currency, or other distinguishing characteristics
