Film Criticism Guide

Search Tips

Looking for film criticism?

  • Search by title of work
    • Understand that films may be released under different titles in different countries
  • Search by director's name
  • Search by both
  • Can't find a particular film? Search for other films by the same director
  • Look for longer articles, to find criticism instead of reviews
  • Peer-reviewed articles on film take longer, so this year's blockbuster might not have anything written about it yet
  • Always check your spelling!
  • For reviews, try the Newspaper Search in ONESearch

ONESearch Searching Tips

  • Use "key" words rather than asking questions or full sentences.
  • Use quotes around a phrase (ex. "recreation therapy" vs. recreation therapy).
  • Use AND, OR, NOT to widen or narrow your search. (See the visual example below).
  • Use * at the end or middle of a term to find variations of the word. Example: recreat* will search for: recreate, recreation, and recreational.
  • Too many results? Try advanced search/filtering options to only search for the newest sources, or peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Too few results? Try changing your keywords or removing any search filters.
